CCS Bard Graduate Exhibition Reviewed in E-Flux
Anthony Discenza, writing for monthly art magazine E-Flux, reviewed CCS Bard’s Graduate Thesis Exhibition. The exhibition, which takes place annually in April, is the culmination of a year of preparation, taking full advantage of the Hessel Museum’s “presentational possibilities.” Students in the Curatorial Studies Program present their proposals to a core group of faculty, then spend the second year of their degree working on their thesis project. Each student receives $6500 and access to the CCS Galleries, and works with artists and museum staff to produce their work.
Artistic Director of CCS Bard Lauren Cornell explains the thesis exhibition has shifted to being part of the museum’s programming since 2018, and has “gained in ambition” since that time, becoming “student collaborations with CCS Bard faculty and staff representing a diverse spectrum of backgrounds, whose teachings support research and experimentation in exhibition-making.” Dicenza calls the thesis exhibit “a continuum of inquiry,” noting that this year’s projects favored group projects, projects about diasporic experience, and archival research. Overall, he writes, “Even if one does not go on to enter the professional curatorial field…the program’s dual emphasis on the critical and the professional can help foster deeper ways of engaging with the world.”
