The Fisher Center’s production of Bedřich Smetana’s opera Dalibor, part of SummerScape 2025, was widely reviewed in outlets including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Seen and Heard International, Parterre Box, and more. “The American Symphony Orchestra was in excellent form under Leon Botstein,” writes Heidi Waleson for the Wall Street Journal, who goes on to praise the set as “ingenious.” For the New York Times, Oussama Zahr wrote that the production was “doubly impressive given that it was the work’s stage premiere in the United States. A strong cast and creative team argued persuasively for the opera’s gleaming orchestrations and sumptuous vocal lines.” Charles Geyer, writing for La Scena Musicale, called the performers of the production “uniformly outstanding, and all the more impressive for the clarity and conviction of the work, as it is sung in the original Czech, despite none of the cast being native speakers.” Geyer continues, “Leon Botstein conducts the excellent American Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Dalibor with utter authority and refined nuance, while director Jean-Romain Vesperini has crafted elegant physical life in his staging, both in the large ensemble segments and the more intimate interactions among the principals.” And in his review for Broadway World, Richard Sasanow writes that Dalibor was “a wonderful production by Jean-Romain Vesperini, with an ingenious set design by Bruno de Lavenere, a fine cast and the American Symphony Orchestra in impeccable form under Leon Botstein.”
