BHSEC DC Student Offered Paid College Tuition by Former NBA Star Magic Johnson, the Washington Post Writes
Jordan Williams, a student journalist and junior at Bard High School Early College DC, was offered paid college tuition by Magic Johnson after asking the former NBA star a question at a news conference, the Washington Post writes. Williams “speaks with a natural thoughtfulness and a practiced ease,” Theresa Vargas writes for the Post. “For the past three years, the teenager has participated in a student broadcasting program, and during that time, he has interviewed plenty of well-known people. Athletes. Performers. Lawmakers. Those experiences are why Jordan knew what to do when the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, which set aside time for news outlets to ask Johnson questions on a day he visited to talk with DC students, invited the teenager to attend and gave him the chance to ask Johnson the first question.” Williams honed his reporting skills at Deanwood Radio Broadcast Youth Journalism Program, which he said exposed him to places and people he might not have encountered otherwise. “For Jordan, I’m super excited for him as a parent,” his father, Greg Williams, told Vargas. “But as a resident of the city, I’m a bit disheartened because Jordan shouldn’t be an exception or an anomaly. All of our children deserve to have access to programming and education and opportunities that will allow their lives to change.”
