The Photography Program Presents John Gossage

The Photography Program would like to announce an upcoming lecture by American photographer John Gossage. He is best known for images of Berlin taken in the 1980s; fascinated by the city’s derelict tracts of land and the forgotten stories they evoke, Gossage took some 10,000 photographs during periods spent there. He has also shot Environmental Protection Agency-listed hazardous sites in and around his native Staten Island, as well as an overgrown wooded area at the edge of the city.

Gossage's newest publication, pomodori a grappolo is a set of three interconnected books. Each book gathers images made in Northern Italy and Sardinia between 2009 and 2011, and each includes a short text by Marlene Klein. An unexpected approach runs through all the details of the books, from the way elements repeat—or don’t, to the choice of materials and color. Since these three books are each a different trim size but include photos that are reproduced at the exact same size, the collective project functions as a study of the way that ink on paper can inform perception.
