A Talk with Andrew Steinfeld, Foreign Policy Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Thursday, December 3, 2015
BGIA (NYC)
6:15 pm – 7:45 pm EST/GMT-5
Andrew W. Steinfeld became the Foreign Policy Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in December 2013. He is responsible for supporting the Chairman on the full range diplomatic and foreign policy issues. He is a career member of the State Department Senior Foreign Service.

Mr. Steinfeld most recently served for two years as the Deputy NATO Senior Civilian Representative (SCR) at International Security Assistance Force Headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan. The SCR’s office serves as NATO’s embassy to Afghanistan. Mr. Steinfeld helped formulate the Alliance policy towards Afghanistan, the transition of the campaign to Afghan lead, and plans for post-ISAF NATO presence after 2014. He coordinated with the U.S. and European military leadership at ISAF HQ, and worked closely with ISAF Commanders General John Allen and General Joe Dunford.

Previously, Mr. Steinfeld served as Senior Fellow at the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies, National Defense University in Washington, D.C, where he established important links between the Center and key Ambassadors in Washington, with an emphasis on the Arabian Peninsula. Mr. Steinfeld has also served as Director for the Office of Arabian Peninsula Affairs in Washington, D.C. (2007-2010), the Chief of Staff to the President’s Special Envoy for Sudan, Andrew Natsios (2006-2007), and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum (2005-2006). His other Foreign Service assignments include Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad; Political Counselor for the U.S. Mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Vienna; and Director for the Office of Press and Public Affairs, Near East Bureau at the State Department. He has also served in Tel Aviv, Paris, and Kuwait.
