In the early-modern era, a cabinet of wonders was a private space in which the marvels of human ingenuity met the curiosities of the natural world. These display rooms, found in elite palaces across Europe, were the first museums devoted to history, the arts, and the sciences. Visitors to a wonder-cabinet seldom knew in advance what they would uncover. Many were startled by what they found.
Inspired by this Wunderkammer model of collection and display, the Bard Baroque Ensemble presents two separate “showcase” programs full of eclectic and surprising music spanning over two centuries. In these back-to-back concerts, a score of student musicians from the College and Conservatory will offer a mélange of musical genres, both vocal and instrumental, from Italy, France, Germany, and England.
On April 21, 2018 at 3pm and 7pm, the Bitó Conservatory Performance Space will transform into a Musical Cabinet of Wonders. The BBE encourages patrons to attend both the afternoon and evening performance. In keeping with tradition, visitors will not know what to expect in either concert. Our only promise: These two musical showcases represent a vast collection intended to delight the senses and stimulate the imagination.
