CCS Bard Speaker Series: Johanna Burton

Through the Speaker Series, CCS Bard brings distinguished artists, scholars, and curators to campus to present on their work. Speaker Series talks are held within Classroom 102 at CCS Bard.

All talks are free and open to the public. 

Johanna Burton is Keith Haring Director and Curator of Education and Public Engagement at the New Museum and the series editor for the Museum’s Critical Anthologies in Art and Culture. An art historian, critic, and curator, she has contributed articles and reviews to numerous journals—including Artforum, Art Journal Open, October, and Texte zur Kunst—as well as exhibition catalogues for institutions throughout the world. Burton has curated or cocurated exhibitions including “Sherrie Levine: Mayhem” at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2011); “Anti-Establishment” at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY (2012); “Take It or Leave It: Institution, Image, Ideology” at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2014); and, at the New Museum, “XFR STN” (2013), “Wynne Greenwood: Kelly” (2015), “Cheryl Donegan: Scenes and Commercials” (2016), “Simone Leigh: The Waiting Room” (2016), “A.K. Burns: Shabby but Thriving” (2017), and “Trigger: Gender As A Tool And A Weapon” (2017), among other projects. She is the editor of Cindy Sherman (October Files, MIT Press, 2006); coeditor, with Shannon Jackson and Dominic Willsdon, of Public Servants: Art and the Crisis of the Common Good (New Museum and MIT Press, 2016); and coeditor, with Reina Gossett and Eric A. Stanley, of Trap Door: Trans Cultural Production and the Politics of Visibility (2018). Prior to her work at the New Museum, Burton was director of the graduate program at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (2010–13) and associate director and senior faculty member at the Whitney Independent Study Program (2008–10).
