John Ashbery Poetry Series Presents

A Reading by Genya Turovskaya MFA '05 and John Yau '72

Genya Turovskaya MFA '05 was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and grew up in New York City. She is the author of The Breathing Body of This Thought (Black Square Editions) as well as numerous chapbooks. Her poetry and translations of contemporary Russian poets have appeared in A Public Space, Asymptote, Chicago Review, Conjunctions, Fence, Gulf Coast, jubilat, Octopus, PEN Poetry, Sangam Poetry, Seedings, The Elephants, and other publications. She is the translator of Aleksandr Skidan's Red Shifting (Ugly Duckling Presse). She is the co-translator of Elena Fanailova's The Russian Version (Ugly Duckling Presse), which won the University of Rochester's Three Percent award for Best Translated Book of Poetry. She is also a co-translator of Arkadii Dragomoshchenko's Endarkenment: Selected Poems (Wesleyan). She holds an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College. She lives in New York City where she is a practicing psychotherapist. 

John Yau is a poet, fiction writer, art critic, publisher of Black Square Editions, and freelance curator. He studied with Robert Kelly while at Bard and earned an MFA from Brooklyn College, where he studied with John Ashbery. Yau has received numerous awards including the Lavan Award from the Academy of American Poets, the 2018 Jackson Poetry Prize, the American Poetry Review Jerome Shestack Award, and a 1988 New York Foundation for the Arts Award. Yau has published over fifty books of poetry, fiction, and criticism, including his most recent collection, Bijoux in the Dark (2018). He is on faculty at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.
