On the tenth anniversary of Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement, this talk considers the career of its principal leader, Joshua Wong (b. 1996). What were the personae Joshua Wong adopted as a political activist? What were his key ideas, and why did they fail to be realized? What advice does he give from prison to fellow protesters, both in Hong Kong and in exile, to manage defeat without bitterness and despair? And what kind of solidarity is most appropriate for us “outsiders” to extend to Wong and his comrades today? These are the most salient questions addressed in this talk.
Speaker: Peter Baehr was a professor in social theory at Lingnan University, Hong Kong, between 2000 and 2021.Today, he is a Fellow in the Center of Social and Political Thought at the University of Southern Florida (Tampa). His books include, Caesar and the Fading of the Roman World (1998), Hannah Arendt, Totalitarianism, and the Social Sciences (2010), and The Unmasking Style in Social Theory (2019).
