Artist Presentation by Brian Lobel
Sex, Cancer & Other Things My Mother Wishes I Never Had is a talk, performance, analysis, and meditation on 20+ years living in a body which had cancer, healed from cancer, remained scarred from cancer, kept being questioned about cancer, worked with cancer, lost colleagues to cancer, a body which made cancer friends, lost cancer friends, taught on cancer, and ran away from teaching, living and breathing cancer.Content warning: there will be talk about cancer. But not just cancer, promise.
Brian Lobel is a performer, teacher and curator who is interested in creating work about bodies and how they are watched, policed, poked, prodded and loved by others. His performance work has shown work internationally in a range of contexts from Harvard Medical School, to Sydney Opera House, to the National Theatre (London) and Lagos Theatre Festival, blending provocative humor with insightful reflection. Ongoing projects include 24 Italian Songs & Arias, Sex with Cancer, and Fun with Cancer Patients. Books include Theatre & Cancer, Purge and BALL & Other Funny Stories About Cancer. Brian has received commissions and grants from the Wellcome Trust, Complicite, and Arts Council England, among others. Brian is currently a Professor of Theatre & Performance at Rose Bruford College, and honored to be a Visiting Faculty with CHRA and at Bard College for Fall 2023. www.blobelwarming.com
