OSUN Student Tani Kuku Inspires Ambition and Hope for Refugee Women in Higher Education

OSUN Student Tani Kuku Inspires Ambition and Hope for Refugee Women in Higher Education
Young women and girls are the least likely candidates for higher education in Kakuma Refugee Camp. Students like Tani Kuku provide the inspiration needed to seek self empowerment through education and advanced forms of employment. Photo by @NappyStock
Tani Kuku is a dedicated student in the Refugee Higher Education Access Program (RhEAP) offered by Open Society University Network (OSUN) in partnership with Resilience Action International, a refugee-led organization based in Kenya. Born in Sudan, she fled to Kenya and started a new life in the Kakuma Refugee Camp, where she has become an example to young girls and schools in her neighborhood because of her educational pursuits. In 2021, Kuku enrolled in RhEAP, part of OSUN’s Hubs for Connected Learning Initiatives, to obtain a certificate to provide her with a way to pursue an undergraduate degree. She has completed three OSUN college preparatory courses, and hopes to be admitted into a degree course next year at one of the online schools she has applied to.

Young women and girls are the least likely candidates for higher education in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, which is why Kuku has been advising young women in her community and encouraging them to join educational centers so they can parallel their male counterparts. Kuku says that the English skills she obtained from OSUN preparatory courses are what enabled her to achieve the independence she now enjoys as an adult woman. As she works towards getting a degree, she will continue focusing on inspiring more young women refugees to enroll in vocational training to improve their qualifications and opportunities in the future.
