Pavlina Tcherneva on Pope Francis’s Call for a Universal Wage
President of the Levy Economics Institute Pavlina Tcherneva remembers Pope Francis’s call for a universal wage, which sought to guarantee dignity and rights for all laborers, five years ago, when he asked governments to address job insecurity. At Easter service in 2020, he said workers should have access to “the three Ts”: trabajo (work), techo (housing), and tierra (land and food). “Half a decade later, the fundamental challenges he urged us to recognize remain unresolved,” Tcherneva writes in her Levy Economics Institute Policy Note.
In October 2021, Tcherneva joined other economists to attend the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences conference, where Francis’s ideas were discussed. Tcherneva includes her remarks from that event, where she argued for a public job guarantee. “We have a job guarantee blueprint and we have a responsibility,” she says.
