Award-Winning Fiction Writer Peter Carey To Give Reading at Bard College on November 3

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— Renowned novelist and short story writer Peter Carey will read from his work on Monday, November 3, at 2:30 p.m. in Olin Auditorium at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Carey is the director of the MFA Program in Creative Writing at Hunter College. The Guardian writes that Carey is “without question the pre-eminent voice of post-colonial Australia.” His books include two Booker Prize–winning novels—Oscar and Lucinda and True History of the Kelly Gang—and Illywhacker (shortlisted for the Booker Prize), Bliss, and Jack Maggs, among other works. Carey will be introduced by novelist and Bard literature professor Bradford Morrow. The reading, which is being presented as part of Morrow’s course on innovative contemporary fiction, is free and open to the public.

Peter Carey was born in Australia in 1943. He is the author of 10 novels, four short story collections, a children’s novel, and three books of nonfiction. Beginning his career in advertising, Carey wrote fiction at night and on the weekends until The Fat Man in History, a short story collection, was published in 1974. This slim book made him an overnight success. He went on to write several more books of award-winning fiction, becoming one of only two authors to win the Booker Prize twice. He has also received the Miles Franklin Award, the Commonwealth Writers Prize, and the Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger, among other honors. In 1990 he moved to New York and has taught at New York University, Princeton University, The New School, and Barnard College. In 2003 he joined Hunter College as the director of the MFA Program in Creative Writing. His most recent novels are My Life as a Fake (2003), Theft: A Love Story (2006), and His Illegal Self (2008).
