Renowned American-Israeli Journalist Stuart Schoffman To Speak at Bard on December 2

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Renowned American-Israeli journalist and scholar Stuart Schoffman will give a lecture, “Is Peace at Hand? Israelis and Palestinians in the Age of Obama,” on December 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Olin 102 at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Mark Lytle, professor of history at Bard, describes Schoffman as “a journalist-scholar who has long been an acute student of Israeli politics with an understanding of the American context as well.” Schoffman comes to Bard from Jerusalem where he is currently a senior fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute.  
 
Stuart Schoffman is a journalist, screenwriter, lecturer, and translator.  He spent 17 years as a columnist for the Jerusalem Report and currently edits Havruta: A Journal of Jewish Conversation. Before moving to Israel in 1988, he worked as a reporter for Fortune magazine, a staff writer at Time, an editor at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, and a screenwriter for many Hollywood studios and producers. His credits include The Finest Hour, an action film about U.S. Navy SEALs starring Rob Lowe, and The Wordmaker, a drama for Israel television about Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, leader of the Hebrew-language revival in the late 19th century. His most recent film, in collaboration with director Paula Weiman-Kelman, is Eyes Wide Open, a documentary exploring the experience of American Jewish visitors to Israel. He also served as a consultant to Sesame Workshop’s joint Israeli-Palestinian production of Sesame Street. Schoffman has taught history at the University of Texas at Austin, screenwriting at the University of Southern California film school, and film at the Claremont Colleges in California, Tel Aviv University, and the Sam Spiegel School of Film and Television in Jerusalem. In 2002, he was named the Koppelman Scholar in Residence of the Anti-Defamation League. His translations of Israeli literature include books by David Grossman and A. B. Yehoshua. A native of Brooklyn, New York, he is a graduate of Harvard and Yale.
