The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra Performs French Program on Friday, March 20

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON — Two brilliant young talents debut with a French accent when the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra (WCO) presents an all-French program on Friday, March 20. Conductor Michael Jacko leads the orchestra in Cherubini’s Overture to “Medea,” and violinist Sunyoung Lee is soloist for Saint-Saëns’ Concerto No. 3 in B Minor. Artistic Director David Leighton conducts the Saint-Saëns, a virtuosic tour-de-force for the violinist, and rounds out the evening with Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, a remarkable showpiece for the orchestra. The performance is at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall on the Bard College campus.. (This program is repeated at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 21 at Pointe of Praise Family Life Center, 243 Hurley Avenue, Kingston, and at 3:00 pm on Sunday, March 22 at Bearsville Theater, Route 212, 1 mile west of Woodstock.) Tickets are $20.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. Subscription sets are available (4 tickets good for any Orchestra concert).

Originally a trumpet player, Michael Jacko began his conducting study with Rufus Jones at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where he served as assistant conductor to the University Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra, and worked as clinician with the Wakefield (Youth) Wind Ensemble in Vienna, VA. He is currently studying with Harold Farberman as a candidate for a Master of Fine Arts degree and a Postgraduate Certificate in orchestral conducting at Bard College. At Bard he has conducted the Conservatory Orchestra, the Bard Orchestra, the Chamber Singers, and the Symphonic Chorus.

Sunyoung Lee began violin lessons at seven, won top prizes in national competitions in her native Korea, then completed her studies at Manhattan School of Music as a scholarship student. Her principal teachers were Yoko Takebe, Michael Gilbert and Lisa Kim of the New York Philharmonic. She has given solo recitals and chamber music concerts in Carnegie Hall, Seiji Ozawa Hall, Howland Cultural Center, and locally in WCO Chamber Specials at Holy Cross Church in Kingston. In the 2004 Tanglewood Music Festival she served as a concertmaster to Maestro Kurt Mazur. She was a member of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra in Connecticut and currently plays in the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, the Greater Newburgh Symphony and the Opera Company of the Highlands.

The WOODSTOCK CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, formed in 1980 by musicians from the Woodstock area, now is comprised of professional musicians from the entire Hudson Valley. The WCO regularly commissions music by local and regional composers and each season performs in Woodstock, Kingston, Saugerties, and at Bard College.
