Bard Arboretum Program Offers Plant Drawing Classes, July 7–30

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Landscape and Arboretum Program at Bard and the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) are offering a noncredit continuing education botanical drawing class, Plant Drawing: Quick and Simple, from July 7 to July 30. The class meets on Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in room 111 of The Gabrielle H. Reem and Herbert J. Kayden Center for Science and Computation. The classes are open to the public. The cost is $186. Member pricing is offered to NYBG members and Friends of the Bard Landscape and Arboretum Program.

Plant Drawing: Quick and Simple uses principles of botanical illustration to teach participants how to quickly make accurate drawings of plants, enabling one to remember the details of a plant long after he or she has seen it. Proportion, perspective, and keen skills of observation are developed. The class will practice drawing plant components, including branches, stems, leaves, and flower parts for personal enjoyment or lab assignments. A materials list will be mailed with a confirmation letter. Participants should bring their dinner.

Instructor Carol Woodin is an artist specializing in rare plants, mainly orchids, and has been working in transparent watercolor on vellum for 14 years, teaching her techniques throughout the Americas. Her paintings have been widely exhibited at international venues, including the Smithsonian Institution; Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, UK; and the Marciana Library, Venice, Italy. A recipient of the 1998 Bouchier Award and a Gold Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society, she is currently exhibitions coordinator for the American Society of Botanical Artists.
