The Bread of Angels: A Journey of Love and Faith chronicles the year Saldaña spent as a Fulbright scholar in Syria during which she studied the role of Jesus in Islam, fled to an ancient desert monastery to confront her wavering faith, and unexpectedly found herself in love with a French novice monk. It is both a love story and a spiritual memoir of her search for faith in the midst of war.

Fascinated by Islam and Eastern Christianity, she has lived in cities throughout the Middle East, and worked for a time as a journalist in Beirut, Lebanon.
