Novelist, Short Story Writer, and Essayist Lynne Tillman to Give Reading at Bard College on Monday, March 1

Novelist, short story writer and essayist Lynne Tillman will read from new work at Bard College on Monday, March 1. Tillman is the author of American Genius: A Comedy, Haunted Houses, Motion Sickness, and Cast in Doubt, among other works. In Bookforum, Donna Seaman called American Genius “demanding and bewitching, harrowing and bemusing, revelatory and transforming.” Her novel No Lease on Life was finalist for the 1998 National Book Critics Circle Award in fiction and a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Tillman will be introduced by novelist and Bard literature professor Bradford Morrow. The reading, which is being presented as part of Morrow’s Innovative Contemporary Fiction course, is free and open to the public. It takes place at 2:30 p.m. in Weis Cinema in the Bertelsmann Campus Center.

In addition to the books mentioned above, Tillman has published three nonfiction books, including an essay collection, The Broad Picture, and three story collections. In 2008, LOVE SENTENCE, a novella, was published by Nothingmoments Press. Tillman’s fiction has been included in anthologies such as The New Gothic, New York Writes After 9/11, The Show I’ll Never Forget, The Penguin Book of New York Stories, and Wild History. Her writing has appeared in journals such as Cabinet, The Happy Hypocrite, Conjunctions, Tin House, McSweeney’s, Black Clock, Bomb, and Aperture, and her essays have been published in Artforum, Art in America, Frieze, Aperture, Nest, The Guardian, and the New York Times. She is professor/writer-in-residence at The University at Albany. In 2006, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, and her papers were acquired by New York University’s Fales Library. She is fiction editor of Fence magazine and on the boards of Housing Works Bookstore and Café, The International Advisory Committee for the Wexner Prize, and PEN American Center.
