Bard College Faculty Member Edie Meidav Awarded Howard Foundation Fellowship

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard College faculty member Edie Meidav, visiting assistant professor of writing, has won a George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation Fellowship to work on a new novel. The Howard Foundation awarded 13 fellowships of $25,000 each for the 2010–2011 academic year. The recipients, representing creative writing in fiction and poetry, were selected from this year’s outstanding group of applicants. Meidav’s proposal, Convenience, involves research into a boxer in Nicaragua, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Florida.

Edie Meidav is the author of Crawl Space (FSG/Picador), The Far Field: A Novel of Ceylon (Houghton Mifflin/Mariner/Kunstler Verlag), and a forthcoming novel set in contemporary northern California dealing with the death penalty, girlhood friendship, motherhood, and millennial dystopia. A former director of the M.A./M.F.A. program in writing at New College of California, she has received a Lannan Fellowship, Fulbright Fellowship (for writing a novel in Sri Lanka), Village Voice Writers on the Verge award, Bard Fiction Prize, and a Janet Heideger Kafka Award for the best novel written by an American woman, and has been cited for Alex and Rosenberg awards. Her work has appeared on the editors’ choice lists of the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and San Francisco Chronicle, and received citations from the Litblog Co-op, The Electric Review, Readysteadybook, and others. She has contributed short work to Ms., Village Voice, Conjunctions, San Francisco Chronicle, Artweek, American Voice, Kenyon Review, and International Literary Quarterly, among other publications. A consulting editor for the Argentina-based International Literary Quarterly, she has also served as guest editor for Fifth Wednesday Journal. Her story, “Kingdom of the Young,” has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize XXXV. She has taught at The New School for Social Research (Lang College), New College of California, and Bard College, and currently resides in upstate New York.

The George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation was established in 1952 by Nicea Howard in memory of her grandparents. Miss Howard had a special interest in furthering the personal development of promising individuals at the crucial middle stages of their careers in the liberal and creative arts. The Howard Foundation awards a limited number of fellowships each year for independent projects in selected fields. The Foundation targets its support specifically to early mid-career individuals, those who have achieved recognition for at least one major project.
