Lieutenant Colonel Suzanne C. Nielsen To Speak at Bard College on September 2

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— The Global and International Studies Program, West Point¬Bard Exchange, and Bard Model UN Club present a lecture, A New Frontier: Strategy and Policy Challenges in Cyberspace, with Lieutenant Colonel Suzanne C. Nielsen on Thursday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard College.

Lieutenant Colonel Suzanne C. Nielsen is an associate professor and the director of the International Relations and National Security Studies Program at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. She is responsible for all aspects of the international relations program, including a core course taught to every cadet and an electives program for majors, and she teaches courses in international relations and national security. She also chairs the Academy’s Scholarship Committee, which selects and prepares cadets to compete for the Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, and other national scholarships. Her research interests include change in military organizations, civil-military relations, and strategy. She coauthored American National Security, Sixth Edition, and coedited American Civil-Military Relations: The Soldier and the State in a New Era, both released by Johns Hopkins University Press (2009). Other publications include monographs on understanding military change and the civil-military relations of strategy, chapters in the edited volume The Future of the Army Profession, and articles in Defence Studies, International Studies Perspective, Public Administration and Management, and Military Review. Her dissertation, Preparing for War: The Dynamics of Peacetime Military Reform, won the American Political Science Association’s Lasswell Award for the best dissertation in the field of public policy in 2002 and 2003.

A military intelligence officer by background, Nielsen has served in the United States, Germany, Korea, and Iraq. While commanding an intelligence company, she deployed her unit twice from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Europe to support peace enforcement operations in Bosnia. Prior to returning to West Point as member of the permanent faculty in 2005, she was a battalion executive officer and then the U.S. chief of a ground forces intelligence center in Korea. During the summer of 2006, she served on the staff of the Director of the National Security Agency, working on transformation-related initiatives. From February to July 2008, she served as the deputy of the Multi-National Forces¬Iraq Commander’s Initiatives Group in Baghdad. A distinguished graduate from the U.S. Military Academy, she also holds a master’s and a doctorate in political science from Harvard University. She was a Marshall Award recipient from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, where she earned a master’s degree in strategy. She is also an alumnus of the National War College. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Political Science Association, she serves on the governing councils of the International Security Studies Section of the International Studies Association and the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society. She currently lives in Newburgh, New York.
