Bard College Presents The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra on September 24

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard College presents The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Artistic Director David Leighton, performing Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons with violinist Betty-Jean Hagen, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4. The concert takes place on Friday, September 24, at 8 p.m. in Olin Hall. The program will be repeated on Saturday, September 25 at 8 p.m. at Pointe of Praise Family Life Center, 243 Hurley Avenue, Kingston, and 3 p.m., Sunday, September 26 at Bearsville Theater in Woodstock. In November the orchestra will present highlights from Haydn’s The Creation with the Kingston High School Choir, Lawrence D. Lohman, director, and Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony No. 35. March brings Handel’s “Dettingen Te Deum” with Ars Choralis, Barbara Pickhardt, Director and Haydn’s “Military” Symphony No. 100. April will feature the “Adagietto” from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 and Respighi’s “Ancient Dances & Airs,” both in new arrangements for chamber orchestra, and Dvořák’s “Czech Suite.”

Violin soloist for Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is Woodstock Chamber Orchestra concertmaster Betty-Jean Hagen. Hagen has appeared as soloist with many of the world’s great orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Symphony, Hague Philharmonic, Birmingham Orchestra, and Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, under such conductors as George Szell, Dimitri Mitropoulos, William Steinberg, Sir John Barbirolli, and Herbert von Karajan. She is the founder and leader of the Tourmaline String Quartet and for many years has been on the music faculty of Vassar College. 

The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, formed in 1980 by musicians from the Woodstock area, now comprises professional musicians from the entire Hudson Valley. The WCO regularly commissions music by local and regional composers and each season performs in Woodstock, Kingston, Saugerties, and at Bard College.
