Red Hook Kicks Off Ten Percent Challenge with a Day of Special Events on 10-10-10
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Town of Red Hook kicks off the year of the Ten Percent Challenge to save energy and reduce carbon emissions on Sunday, October 10 (10/10/10). The village of Red Hook will be packed full of activities and events planned to help members of the community find new ways to reduce energy use. Endorsed by the Town and Village boards, the Ten Percent Challenge campaign challenges businesses, institutions, and households to reduce their fossil fuels use by 10 percent over one year, 10/10/10–10/10/11, and to motivate 10 percent of their citizens, employees, or social contacts to become involved. For schedules and more information, go to www.redhookchallenge.org.
A variety of energy conservation workshops and events are scheduled throughout the Town of Red Hook this Sunday. Events include the Onteora Runners Club Half Marathon and 5K, a 1K walk for seniors and strollers, workshops on composting, home weatherization, green building techniques, tree planting, bicycle repair, and more. Participating farmers will offer discounts to customers who arrive at their farm stands by foot or by bike. Household electronics can be recycled at the Linden Avenue Middle School from noon to 3 p.m. Additional events will be held at the Red Hook Town Recreation Park, Agway, the Elmendorph Inn, Taste Budd’s Café, and a variety of other local businesses.
The Ten Percent Challenge campaign is supported by partners including Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation, Sustainable Hudson Valley, Mid-Hudson Energy $mart Communities, the Student Conservation Association’s AmeriCorps team, and the local leadership coalition Red Hook Together, which includes the Town and Village of Red Hook, the Red Hook Central School District, the Red Hook Chamber of Commerce, Bard College, and other community organizations.
