Bard College Presents the Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle in a Family Concert

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— The Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle is presenting a family concert on Saturday, January 8, at 2 p.m. at the Bard Chapel. It is free and open to the public; no reservations are necessary. The concert is intended for audiences of all ages and families are encouraged to attend. For more information call 845-758-7887.

The program includes Mozart’s Sonata K. 301 in G Major for violin and piano; Manuel de Falla’s Suite Populaire Espagnole for violin and piano; Ravel’s Tzigane; and Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 in G Minor. Performing in this concert are Susanne Son, piano; Hye-Jin Kim, violin; Antonin Fajt ’14, piano; and 11-year-old Bard Conservatory Preparatory Division student Ethan Richman, piano.

About the Performers

Describing the artistry of violinist Hye-Jin Kim, winner of the 2009 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, The Strad lauded her “heart-stopping and unrivaled beauty…supremely musical playing, well-thought out, yet of the moment.”  Kim won First Prize at the 2004 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition when she was 19. For the 2010–11 season, she makes her recital debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on the CAG winners series. As concerto soloist, she performs with the Tulsa Signature Symphony (Tchaikovsky), Minnesota Sinfonia (Vivaldi), and with the Pan Asia Symphony (Sibelius) in Hong Kong.  Kim’s collaborative appearances include Music at Menlo, Madison Chamber Music Festival (Ga.), Chamber Music at Gretna, Kansas City’s Sunflower Festival, and a spring 2011 tour with Musicians from Marlboro.

Canadian-born pianist Susanne Son made her debut with the Toronto Symphony at the age of 12. Since then, she has appeared as soloist with several orchestras, including the Philadelphia and Minnesota Orchestras. In the United States she has performed at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Academy of Music, Kimmel Center, Kravis Center in Florida, and Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis, among others. She has also performed throughout Canada and Japan. Son’s festival appearances include the Tanglewood Music Center, Music Academy of the West, Kneisel Hall Summer Chamber Music Festival, and Banff Centre School of Fine Arts.

Ethan Richman (age 11), a Saugerties resident, began studying piano at the age of 6. He commenced his studies at Bard College’s Music Conservatory— Preparatory Division at the age of 9 and continues to study under Susanne Son. Ethan currently performs for local musical programs around the Hudson Valley and additionally performs at the Northeast Center for Special Care in its Music Therapy Program. Ethan has been a member of the Davidson Institute Young Scholars Program since 2005. He is fascinated with linguistics and is currently studying Modern Hebrew, Latin, Japanese, and French.

The Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle was founded by Helen Huntington Hull and two friends from Staatsburg, New York. They enlisted the help of violinist Emil Hauser, then a member of the Bard College faculty and original first violinist of the Budapest Quartet, to invite musicians to perform at the Mills and Vanderbilt Mansions. In 1979, the concert series began its association with Bard College. The HVCMC remains a venue that attracts many of the world’s preeminent chamber music artists. In 2000, Robinson and Laredo assumed artistic directorship of the chamber music series. For further information, call 845-339-7907 or e-mail [email protected].
