John Ashbery Poetry Series at Bard College Presents Caroline Bergvall and Adam Pendleton on February 10

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— The John Ashbery Poetry Series at Bard College presents Caroline Bergvall and Adam Pendleton performing their work on Thursday, February 10. The event takes place at 6:00 p.m. in Weis Cinema in the Bertelsmann Campus Center and is free and open to the public.

Caroline Bergvall is an international writer who works across media, languages, and art forms. Her projects include books, audio pieces, performances, and installations. Her publications include Goan Atom, Fig, and Alyson Singes. She has presented projects at MoMA, Tate Modern, The Serpentine Gallery, The Hammer Museum, and has held teaching residencies at Bard, Dartington College of Arts, and Temple University. Her latest installation of integrated language-space-sound, Middling English, was commissioned by the John Hansard Gallery (September–October 2010). She recently completed an AHRC Fellowship in the Creative and Performing Arts (2007–2010), and is a visiting fellow at the University of Copenhagen in Spring 2011. Her volume of new and out-of-print pieces, Meddle English, has just been published by Nightboat Books (February 2011). Of French-Norwegian descent, she lives in London.

Working in multiple media, including silkscreen, sculpture, performance, and text, Adam Pendleton composes formal templates into which he slots information, shifting language, forms, and images into the arena of artistic inquiry. Drawing on a wide range of cultural and political references and rejecting conventional hierarchies among sources, he adopts existing imagery and text as a means to free them from their existing frameworks. Pendleton recently had a solo exhibition at The Kitchen, New York, which featured the U.S. premiere of his large-scale video installation BAND. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, notably at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Studio Museum, New York; Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; and Tate Liverpool. Recent biennials and exhibitions include Greater New York, MoMA/PS1; The Generational: Younger Than Jesus, New Museum; Performa 07; Manifesto Marathon at The Serpentine Gallery, London; and ELTDK Amsterdam, a three-part exhibition organized by Kunstverein, Amsterdam and de Appel in 2009.
