ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College presents the Longy Conservatory Orchestra, conducted by Julian Pellicano, on Friday, April 1 at 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. The evening’s program includes John Adams’s The Wound Dresser, with Thomas Meglioranza, baritone; and Jean Sibelius’s Valse Triste and Symphony No. 2. 

The Longy Conservatory Orchestra (LCO), consisting of all string, woodwind and brass students, is the primary ensemble for orchestral training and repertoire at The Longy School of Music. The LCO presents six concerts per season, exploring a wide range of repertoire encompassing baroque and contemporary music in addition to the classical and romantic orchestral canon. Julian Pelicano is the principal conductor of the Longy Conservatory Orchestra and artistic director of Large Ensembles. He has earned degrees from The Peabody Conservatory; Johns Hopkins University; The Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden; and two Master’s degrees while on fellowship at the Yale School of Music, in conducting and percussion. He was selected to participate in the 2009 Kurt Masur Conducting Masterclass in New York, and further honors include a Fellowship from the Centre Acanthes to study with Peter Eötvös and Zsolt Nagy, the 2008 Presser Music Award, and Yale’s Philip F. Nelson Prize. On faculty at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Pellicano has served as conductor of the Norfolk New Music ensemble since 2008, and as assistant conductor of the New Britain (Connecticut) Symphony. Principal teachers have included conductors Shinik Hahm, Per Andersberg, and percussionists Anders Loguin and Robert van Sice.

Baritone Thomas Meglioranza’s recent engagements include Harbison’s Symphony No. 5 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Eight Songs for a Mad King with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Messiah with the Minnesota Orchestra, Copland’s Old American Songs with the National Symphony, Schoenberg’s Ode to Napoleon with Peter Serkin and the Brentano Quartet, and Virgil Thomson songs with BMOP. His recital of WWI songs at the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society made the Philadelphia Inquirer’s list of “Top Ten Classical Music Events of 2009.” Other recital appearances include Wigmore Hall and on Broadway portraying Robert Schumann with Sting in Twin Spirits. His opera roles include Prior Walter in Eötvös’s Angels in America and Chou En-lai in Nixon in China with Opera Boston. He was a winner of the 2005 Naumberg Vocal Award and the 2002 Concert Artists Guild Competition. A graduate of Grinnell College and the Eastman School of Music, he is currently Visiting Artist in Voice at the Longy School of Music.
