The Fisher Center Presents Two "Conservatory Sundays" Matinee Concerts in May

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Bard College Conservatory of Music presents the “Conservatory Sundays” concert series at The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts on May 1 and May 15 at 3 p.m. Performed by Conservatory students with faculty and special guests, the spring matinee series will be held in the acoustically superb Sosnoff Theater. Proceeds from the Conservatory Sundays series benefit the Scholarship Fund of The Bard College Conservatory of Music. Seating location for tickets reserved without a donation will be assigned by the Box Office. On Sunday, May 1 at 3 p.m., the Conservatory Orchestra presents “Conservatory Sundays: Conservatory Orchestra,” conducted by Leon Botstein. The program includes Szymanowski’s Concert Overture and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. Two local composers’ works will be featured: George Tsontakis’s Unforgettable (for two violins and orchestra), and Joan Tower’s Rapids for Piano and Orchestra. Conservatory soloists Fangyue He and Yue Sun, violin, and Shun-Yang Lee, piano, will be featured. Suggested donations are $20 (orchestra seating) and $15 (parterre/first balcony). The minimum donation for orchestra seating is $5. Seating location for tickets reserved without a donation will be assigned by the Box Office.

Internationally renowned soprano Dawn Upshaw will perform in concert with pianist Kayo Iwama, singers of the Graduate Vocal Arts Program and the Collaborative Piano Fellows, on Sunday, May 15 at 3 p.m. in the Sosnoff Theater. “Conservatory Sundays Benefit Concert: Dawn Upshaw and Friends” will include a wide range of classical works and folk song arrangements featuring solos, duets, and vocal ensembles, including music by Schumann, Copland, Britten, Berio, Kodaly and Grainger. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Scholarship Fund of The Bard College Conservatory of Music. Tickets are $15, 25, 50 and $75*. A four-time Grammy Award winner, Dawn Upshaw is featured on more than 50 recordings, including the million-selling Symphony No. 3 by Henryk Gorecki. Her discography also includes full-length opera recordings of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro; Messiaen’s St. Francois d’Assise; Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress; John Adams’s El Niño; two volumes of Canteloube’s “Songs of the Auvergne”, and a dozen recital recordings. Upshaw holds honorary doctorate degrees from Yale, the Manhattan School of Music, Allegheny College, and Illinois Wesleyan University. She is Artistic Director of the Vocal Arts Program at the Bard College Conservatory of Music, and a faculty member of the Tanglewood Music Center.

The mission of The Bard College Conservatory of Music is to provide the best possible preparation for a person dedicated to a life immersed in the creation and performance of music. The Conservatory features a unique double-degree program in which all undergraduate conservatory students receive a bachelor of music and a bachelor of arts in another field.
