"Echoes of the East...East...East" Features Flute Works by Composers from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East
Accompanying Spencer will be Linda Hall, piano, and Frederick Hammond, harpsichord. The recital is the opening event in a five-day seminar devoted to the study of present-day flute repertoire. Seminar participants include professional artists, graduate and undergraduate flutists from Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, and elsewhere.
The program will include Bohuslav Martinu’s First Sonata, Remus Georgescu’s Exorcisme, Reza Vali’s Folk Song Set No. 9, Chen Yi’s Three Bagatelles from China West, Lydia Ayers’s Ansikten, and Murray Schafer, Sonatine.
A second recital, performed by seminar participants, will be presented Tuesday evening June 21, at 8 p.m. at Bard Hall.
About the Performers:
Patricia Spencer, known as a trailblazer, is flutist with the Da Capo Chamber Players. In a March 2011 Merkin Concert Hall recital, she gave the US premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Bijou, a theatrical work for which she was joined by bass clarinetist Lisa Preimesberger, along with the world premiere (revised version) of Shirish Korde’s Lalit, written for her and renowned tabla player Samir Chatterjee. Prior historic peaks in her career include premieres of Elliott Carter’s Enchanted Preludes, Stockhausen’s Kathinkas Gesang (US premiere), Harvey Sollberger’s Riding the Wind, and Shulamit Ran’s concerto, Voices. Other highlights have included the Pierce Boulez Sonatine for the Bard Music Festival, Joan Tower’s Flute Concerto for the National Flute Association Convention in Nashville, and a guest appearance with the Avalon String Quartet in Mario Davidovsky’s Quartetto for the Washington Square Music Society. Recent New York Times reviews have cited her work in Tania León’s Alma, and her “passionate, warm-blooded performance” of the Luciano Berio Sequenza. Spencer has commissioned dozens of pieces, including Thea Musgrave's now-classic Narcissus and Judith Shatin’s Kairos (Neuma Records). She has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, for her solo recordings and commissioning projects. A graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory, where she was a student of Robert Willoughby, Spencer continued her studies with Marcel Moyse, John Wummer, and Josef Marx. She teaches flute and chamber music at Bard College and Hofstra University. The Da Capo Chamber Players is resident ensemble with the Composition Program of the new Bard College Conservatory of Music.
Linda Hall, a pianist and assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, appears regularly with the MET Chamber Ensemble’s Carnegie Hall series, collaborates with recitalists throughout the US and abroad, and is on the Tanglewood Faculty. Recordings include discs with flutist Patricia Spencer (Neuma), with cellist Jascha Silberstein (Heritage), and a new CD on the Capriccio label.
Frederick Hammond received his B.A and Ph.D. at Yale University, and has received fellowships from the American Academy, Villa I Tatti, and Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation for Venetian Studies. He is Music Director emeritus of the Clarion Music Society and author of two books on Girolamo Frescobaldi, including Music and Spectacle in Baroque Rome, and numerous articles. He is coeditor of Ambiente Barocco, the exhibition catalogue of the Bard Graduate Center. He has performed at the Smithsonian Institution, Lincoln Center, and the Nakamichi Festival, among others, and has recorded for Nonesuch, ABC Westminster, and Decca. Frederick Hammond is Irma Brandeis Professor of Romance Cultures and Music History at Bard College.
