Bard College’s Renowned Literary Magazine, Conjunctions, Wins $75,000 in Grants from National Endowment for the Arts and New York State Council on the Arts

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Conjunctions, the celebrated literary magazine published by Bard College and edited by novelist Bradford Morrow, Bard Professor of Literature, Bard Center Fellow, and Conjunctions founder, has won a $25,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and a $50,000 multiyear ($10,000/year) grant from the New York State Council on the Arts to support its print and electronic publication of award-winning fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction from many of the world’s leading contemporary writers and most innovative emerging authors. Other recent honors for Conjunctions include the republication of Stephen O’Connor’s story “Next to Nothing” from Conjunctions:60, In Absentia in the 2014 edition of The Best American Short Stories; and the selection of three works first published in its pages—“The Tower,” by Frederic Tuten; “By the Time You Read This,” by Yannick Murphy (both reprinted from Conjunctions:60, In Absentia); and “Fables,” by Bard Fiction Prize winner Bennett Sims (from Conjunctions:61, A Menagerie)—in the 2015 Pushcart Prize anthology. In addition, an excerpt from Emily Anderson’s “Three Little Novels,” which appears in the current issue, Conjunctions:63, Speaking Volumes, was reprinted in the January 2015 issue of Harper’s Magazine.

Conjunctions publishes innovative fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction by emerging voices and contemporary masters in a biannual anthology of new writing that appears every May and November. For over three decades, Conjunctions has challenged accepted forms and styles, with equal emphasis on groundbreaking experimentation and rigorous quality. The journal is committed to launching and supporting the careers of unknown authors—William T. Vollmann, David Foster Wallace, and Karen Russell all had some of their very first publications in Conjunctions—while providing a space for better-known voices like Joyce Carol Oates or William H. Gass to work outside audience expectations. Conjunctions’ free weekly online magazine showcases the work of one writer each week, giving the journal a place to publish the exceptional work that doesn’t fit into the theme of a given anthology, to feature high-quality visual work, and to delve into the exciting new field of e-writing. Conjunctions’ website also features a multimedia vault of recorded readings, unavailable elsewhere; as well as full-text selections from the anthologies and a constantly updated table of contents for its upcoming issue.

Published by Bard College, with editorial offices in New York City and Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, Conjunctions this year took the top spot for the number of Pushcart Prizes in fiction received by its contributors over the past decade. Since 1981, this cornerstone of contemporary literary publishing has been a living notebook in which authors can write freely and audiences read dangerously. The National Endowment for the Arts was established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government. To date, the NEA has awarded more than $5 billion to support artistic excellence, creativity, and innovation for the benefit of individuals and communities. The NEA extends its work through partnerships with state arts agencies, local leaders, other federal agencies, and the philanthropic sector. To join the discussion on how art works, visit the NEA at arts.gov.

The New York State Council on the Arts is dedicated to preserving and expanding the rich and diverse cultural resources that are and will become the heritage of New York’s citizens. The Council supports artistic excellence and the creative freedom of artists without censure, and the rights of all New Yorkers to access and experience the power of the arts and culture, and the vital contribution the arts make to the quality of life in New York communities.
