Bard College Hosts Public Debate With West Point
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Has individualism, as one of the highest American values, done more harm or good for American society? The world at large? The Bard Debate Union and Hannah Arendt Center host a debate titled “Resolved: Individualism is an American value worth fighting for” on Tuesday, October 7, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Multipurpose Room. This event is free and open to the public and no reservations are required. For more information contact Ruth Zisman at [email protected].
The debate will feature Bard Debate Union members, Bard College faculty, and cadets and faculty from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Sponsored by the Hannah Arendt Center, the Bard Debate Union, West Point –Bard Exchange, and the Bard Center for Civic Engagement, this debate is inspired by the topic of this year’s Hannah Arendt Center Conference, “The Unmaking of Americans: Are There Still American Values Worth Fighting For?” taking place October 9–10, 2014 at Bard’s Olin Hall. For more information about the conference go to bard.edu/hannaharendtcenter/.
The Bard Debate Union, founded in 2004, is committed to promoting the values of civic discourse, dialogue, and debate throughout the Bard College community and the greater Hudson Valley region of New York. Since 2004, Bard Debate Union has competed at the highest levels of college debate, traveling every year to numerous intercollegiate debate tournaments at colleges and universities throughout the United States. The Bard Debate Union also hosts several public debates, debate workshops, and lectures (all open to the public) every semester, and is involved in several outreach projects in the local Red Hook school district, Bard High School Early Colleges, and the Bard Prison Initiative.
