Bard College Hosts Panel on U.S.-European Security Concerns, Featuring International and West Point Experts, on November 3

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard College Center for Civic Engagement and the Political Studies Program will present a panel, “Europe Wonders, What Will America Fight For?” The panel will address the increasing and overlapping challenges facing U.S.-European relations, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, tensions with Russia, the military drawdown in Afghanistan, and the future of NATO and security challenges across the Middle East and North Africa. Featured panelists include Simona Soare from Romania, Joe Burton from New Zealand, and Scott Silverstone from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.  The event will be on Monday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the Weis Cinema at the Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard College.

Simona Soare is a postdoctoral fellow with the National University of Political Science and Public Administration in Bucharest, where she also teaches international relations. Joe Burton is a lecturer in international relations and international security at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. His research focuses on U.S. foreign policy and how NATO is adapting to deal with new strategic challenges. Scott Silverstone is professor of international relations in the Department of Social Sciences at West Point and the author of Preventive War and American Democracy. He also teaches in the Bard Globalization and International Affairs program as part of the West Point–Bard College exchange.

Both Soare and Burton were participants in a foreign policy institute run by Bard this past summer.  For six weeks Bard hosted a multinational group of 18 university-level scholars in a series of seminars and study visits under the heading, “Grand Strategy in Context: Institutions, People and the Making of U.S. Foreign Policy.” The program was funded by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Silverstone hosted the institute for a day at West Point, where participants learned about the role of military academies in the United States and the different ways in which West Point cadets learn about international relations.

“This panel is a tremendous opportunity to hear from experts from three different vantage points who can give us insights into the complexity of the issues currently facing the U.S.-European relationship,” said James Ketterer of Bard College, who was the academic director of the summer foreign policy institute. “Our work with the State Department on the U.S. foreign policy institute, combined with the Bard–West Point Exchange, highlights Bard’s ability to bring together diverse viewpoints and expertise from across the globe.”
