Bard College and Ulster County BOCES to Host Mid-Hudson Math Teachers Circle Summer Intensive, July 1–3

Intensive Three-Day Session Links Problem Solving and Enrichment to the New Middle School Mathematics Common Core Standards

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—From July 1–3, Bard College and Ulster County BOCES will host the Mid-Hudson Math Teachers Circle Summer Intensive, a three-day session linking problem solving and enrichment activities to the new Middle School Mathematics Common Core Standards. The program takes place at Bard College and is free and open to all mid-level math teachers, mathematics professors, and mathematicians in the Mid-Hudson region. Mathematics professors from Bard College and other local colleges and universities will lead a series of hands-on workshops designed to provide teachers with fun and challenging problems on topics such as ratio and proportion, functions, and statistics. In this workshop, the common core topics of ratio, functions, and statistics will be brought to life, giving teachers ideas and activities to bring back to their classrooms and strengthen their own math backgrounds. Meals and materials will be provided. For more information, please contact Lauren Rose, Bard associate professor of mathematics, at [email protected]. To register for the workshop, go through MyLearningPlan through Ulster BOCES at the following link: https://www.mylearningplan.com/WebReg/ActivityProfile.asp?D=10333&I=1336728&H=1.

The Mid-Hudson Math Teachers Circle is an extension of the Bard Math Circle, which since 2007 has brought mathematical enrichment programs to schools and libraries in Dutchess, Ulster, and Columbia Counties. A math teachers circle is a community of math educators coming together to explore open-ended math problems that require new and creative ways of thinking.  The ultimate goal of the Teachers Circle is to strengthen math education by providing enrichment activities for middle school math educators.

Lauren Rose, associate professor of mathematics at Bard, assembled a team of educators last summer to launch the Mid-Hudson Math Teachers Circle. The team is comprised of Jeff Suzuki (associate professor of mathematics, Brooklyn College; former director of quantitative support at Bard College); Sheila Shaffer (math teacher, Bailey Middle School, Kingston); Beth Goldberg (math teacher, Linden Avenue Middle School, Kingston, and Bard MAT alumna); and Dana Fulmer (supervisor, Professional Development, Ulster BOCES). The team received training from American Institute of Mathematics during the summer of 2012.

The Mid-Hudson Math Teachers Circle provides a great professional development networking opportunity for middle school math teachers in Dutchess, Ulster, and Columbia counties. They welcome new members to join the Math Circle. The group held two inaugural events this spring, “Dominoes, Problem-Solving and Graph Theory” on March 18, and “Using Games to Explore Probability” on May 20.

Support for the Mid-Hudson Math Teachers Circle has been provided by the Math Sciences Research Institute, National Security Agency, American Institute of Mathematics, Dutchess County Teacher’s Union, Bard College, and Ulster BOCES.
