Bard Student Organizes Math Museum Exhibit in Ulster County Elementary School

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard graduate and current Bard Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) student Joy Sebesta ’13 organized the presentation of the National Museum of Mathematics traveling exhibition, Math Midway 2 Go, at the Marlboro Elementary School in Ulster County on March 5. This traveling version of the museum’s hands-on math exhibits offered students in grades 3 to 5 an opportunity to enjoy math, engage their minds, and de-stress before the upcoming state tests.

Math Midway 2 Go features six different exhibits: The Ring of Fire, Roller Graphicoaster, Funny Face, The Organ Function Grinder, Miles of Tiles, and The Number Line Tightrope. The Funny Face Computer was a student favorite; it takes your picture and then distorts it using a mathematical equation. The students also enjoyed creating beautiful tessellations with Miles of Tiles.

Joy Sebesta ’13, who is now enrolled in the Bard MAT Program and plans to become a math teacher at a local school, organized this educational project. Sebesta is a past leader of the Bard Math Circle, coordinator for the Mid-Hudson Teachers’ Math Circle, and PTA treasurer for the Marlboro Elementary School; she also leads two local Girl Scout troops.
