National Book Award–Winning Author Norman Rush to Give Reading at Bard College on Tuesday, September 22
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Tuesday, September 22, Norman Rush, the National Book Award winner and author of Whites, Mating, Mortals, and Subtle Bodies, will read from his work at Bard College. “Rush’s characters want to fall in love, to laugh and enjoy themselves. Their quirks, opinions, compulsions . . . keep us engrossed—along with the clarity and precision of Rush’s sentences, the freshness of his observations,” wrote Francine Prose in her review of Subtle Bodies in The New York Review of Books. The reading, presented by the Written Arts Program, takes place at 7 p.m. in Weis Cinema in the Bertelsmann Campus Center. It is free and open to the public; no tickets or reservations are required. The reading will be introduced by Bard Writer in Residence Mona Simpson.
Norman Rush’s stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Paris Review, and Best American Short Stories. Whites, a collection of stories, was published in 1986, and his first novel, Mating, the recipient of the National Book Award, was published in 1991. He was raised in Oakland, California, and graduated from Swarthmore College in 1956. He has been an antiquarian book dealer, and a college instructor. He and his wife Elsa lived and worked in Africa from 1978 to 1983. They now reside in Rockland County, New York.
