Bard College: The Montgomery Place Campus to Host Tours of Historic Mansion on Saturdays, Beginning June 4

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard College: the Montgomery Place Campus will begin hosting guided tours of the historic Montgomery Place mansion on Saturdays, and by appointment, on June 4. Bard purchased the 380-acre estate adjacent to the Bard campus from the Historic Hudson Valley in January, and is now in the process of creating a master plan to guide the integration of the two campuses and utilize the new facilities in a manner consistent with the College’s commitment to historic preservation, public access, and the environment.

The Montgomery Place Campus grounds, including gardens, arboretum, and three miles of hiking trails with views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains, are open daily, dawn to dusk. Mansion tours will take place Saturdays, June 4–September 3, at 10:30 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2:15 p.m. Tours are $10 per person. No reservations are necessary, first come, first served. For more information, please call 845-758-7505.

A designated National Historic Landmark, Montgomery Place is a 380-acre estate purchased in 1802 by Janet Livingston Montgomery, the widow of Revolutionary War hero General Richard Montgomery. Framed by the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains, the property features grounds influenced by landscape designer Andrew Jackson Downing and a mansion substantially modified and expanded by architect Alexander Jackson Davis, both prominent figures in their fields. The site's Hudson River location, scenic beauty, expansive natural and designed landscape, and collection of neoclassical architecture make Montgomery Place one of the most important and meticulously preserved historic sites in the United States.

The original campus of Bard College, which was founded in 1860 as St. Stephen’s College, was a gift from John Bard, who donated part of his riverside estate for its establishment. A number of significant buildings from the estate and that era are still in use. Over the past 155 years, the campus and its facilities have grown to accommodate Bard’s academic programs and its mission to offer programs for the community. Bard’s largely open campus has welcomed members of the community and visitors from around the globe to enjoy its beauty and participate in its many academic and cultural programs. The Bard campus has been widely hailed as one of the most beautiful in the United States —a status that is strengthened and maintained with the addition of the Montgomery Place Campus.
