The Bard College Institute for Writing & Thinking Announces Summer Workshops

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— This July 8-13, the Bard College Institute for Writing and Thinking (IWT) will host weeklong workshops that offer high school and college faculty the opportunity to explore the role that writing plays in teaching and learning across disciplines and grade levels. Participants come from across the U.S. and around the world to collaborate in a conversation that spans culture, pedagogy, and language. For more information and to register, visit iwt.bard.edu.

The workshops engage faculty in the practice of “writing-based teaching,” while also making time to discuss its applications in the classroom. Each workshop has its own distinct focus on a particular context where writing-based pedagogies prove to be particularly useful for student engagement and critical literacy.

A few examples: Teaching the Academic Paper invites faculty to investigate their own understanding of academic writing, and how these longer assignments are developed for students; Revolutionary Grammar takes its cue from the grammar in context movement, asking participants to engage in rigorous written play as a way to debunk grammatical rules; and Writing to Learn in the STEM Disciplines aims to work with faculty in areas where writing might not be a natural pedagogical tool to make explicit how effective the metacognitive work of in class writing is for any subject area.

All workshops involve diverse texts, the chance to collaborate with fellow educators from around the globe, the opportunity to learn new classroom techniques, and provide hands-on experiential practices that support and emphasize critical thinking, writing, inquiry, and discourse. Their unifying goal is to deepen student learning.

During the workshops, teachers live in single rooms on the Bard College campus, eat meals together, and enjoy the beautiful setting and lively atmosphere of Annandale-on-Hudson in the summer.

“I enjoyed being in the classroom and writing. I felt that I re-learned how writing can be used not only to explore teaching issues but to work toward resolving them – like good tools,” commented a recent participant, an art history professor. “The prompts were wonderfully thoughtful and elicited depth of thinking quickly.”

The Bard College Institute for Writing and Thinking (IWT) has over thirty years of experience offering faculty development programs that enrich and enliven classrooms across disciplines through a focus on the role of writing in teaching and learning. IWT promotes pedagogical innovations that, in the words of former director Teresa Vilardi, “emphasize the need for teachers to develop a practice for writing-based teaching, not simply a collection of strategies.”  These writing-based teaching practices emphasize collaboration, active learning, experimentation, playfulness, and inquiry across subject areas.
