Jamil Dakwar, Director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Human Rights Program, to Teach at Bard Globalization and International Affairs Program in New York City
 

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard Globalization and International Affairs Program (BGIA) in New York City announced that Jamil Dakwar, director of the Human Rights Program at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), will teach for BGIA this fall. Dakwar will offer a course on human rights and national security that explores responses to acts and threats of terrorism and the impact of counterterrorism laws, policies, and practices on human rights. The course includes studying the ways in which counterterrorism policies can threaten specific human rights, such as the right to life, freedom from torture and arbitrary detention, the right to a fair trial, freedoms of association and expression, right to privacy, and, the right to nondiscrimination. 

“We are thrilled to have Jamil Dakwar join the BGIA faculty,” said James Ketterer, Bard’s dean of international studies and academic director of BGIA. “He brings a wealth of experience from the front lines of legal advocacy, holding governments accountable to international human rights obligations. Our students will benefit from his work on many of the most important human rights cases of our time.”

At the ACLU Jamil Dakwar leads a team of lawyers and advocates who use a human rights framework to complement existing ACLU legal and legislative advocacy, primarily in the areas of counterterrorism, racial justice, immigrants’ rights, women’s rights, and criminal and juvenile justice. He also serves as the ACLU’s main representative to the United Nations. He has testified before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, United Nations human rights bodies, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, about human rights violations in the United States.

The Bard Globalization and International Affairs Program (BGIA) provides a unique opportunity for college students and recent college graduates from around the world to take advanced courses in international affairs while working in carefully selected internships based on individual interests—all while experiencing life in Manhattan. BGIA students engage in the study and practice of international law, international relations theory, global public health, political economy, international reporting, and other aspects of international affairs. BGIA offers semester and summer programs. This year, BGIA started a joint program with Central European University.
