It is with great pride that I introduce new staff members and congratulate returning staff this fall. All of us in student services join together in welcoming you back to campus. There is much exciting and interesting work ahead of us this year.
Alumni/ae Affairs
After 10 years in Bard’s Admissions Office, Jane Brien '89 joins the Development Office as the new Director of Alumni/ae Affairs. Jane comes to her new position with a nuanced understanding of the college and enthusiasm for its students and alumni/ae. She will be working to strengthen the connection between the alumni/ae and the current students.
Bard Globalization and International Affairs (BGIA) Program
Please welcome new Program Director Carter Page, the former Chief Operating Officer of the Energy & Power Investment Banking Group at Merrill Lynch. Until July 2007, he was Deputy Branch Manager of Merrill Lynch’s representative office in Moscow which he opened in 2004. He is a co-founder and partner of Global Energy Capital, a New York-based financial institution focused on the energy sector in frontier emerging markets. Carter is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, where he was a former International Affairs Fellow and co-director of the Council’s study group on the Caspian Sea region. He has served as an adjunct faculty member in the Master of Science in Global Affairs program at New York University. Carter is a Distinguished Graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy where he was a Trident Scholar. He holds an MBA from New York University, an MA from Georgetown University and is currently completing requirements for a PhD from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies.
New Assistant Director Mia McCully is a graduate of Bard College(’07), where she majored in Political Studies. An alumna of the BGIA program, Mia interned at the Overseas Press Club, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Independent Press Association. Mia's senior thesis compared political ideologies in the Middle East, with a particular focus on Arab Nationalism and Political Islam in Egypt. Originally from Guam, Mia also lived in Egypt, where she worked for a destination management company and a media development company.
Career Development
Elisabeth Giglio has accepted the assistant director's position. Elisabeth earned a B.A., from Earlham College and an M.S.W. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has spent 10 years working in the film industry in NYC, managing a post-production sound facility and has also worked in non-profit and social service organizations. Elisabeth completed a certificate in career counseling at NYU and was a career counselor at NYU’s Center for Career Management and continues to teach classes at NYU’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies. Jan Coraza, formerly in the Office of Admission, has joined our office as an administrative assistant.
Chaplaincy
David Nelson joins the Chaplaincy as Rabbi and Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion, teaching courses in religion and in the First-Year Seminar program.
David Nelson earned a BA from Wesleyan University, a Master's Degree and Rabbinic Ordination from Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, and a PhD from New York University. His rabbinic experience has included five years in a small congregation, fifteen years at CLAL, a think-tank and center for leadership education, five years in a community center, and three years as the primary writer and teacher for the Reform Movement's Israel organization. He has taught in a wide range of venues, and, following the 2005 publication of his Judaism, Physics and God: Searching for Sacred Metaphors in a Post-Einstein World, has focused increasingly on issues of science and religion. He is a long-time resident of Teaneck, NJ, but looks forward to relocating permanently to the Bard area in the summer of 2009.
Counseling Services
Two long-time members of the staff, Director of Counseling Services Beveraly Bellinger and clinician Nancy Kantor, will not be returning this fall. Two new clinicians, Jamie O’Neil, LCSW and Barbara Cernak, LCSW, join the staff temporarily as the college conducts a search to fill the directorship.
Tamara Telberg, LCSWR, will be joining the counseling center staff towards the end of September. She comes to Bard from the Ulster County Dept. of Mental Health where she has worked for the past 8 years. She received her Masters in Social Work from NYU and her Post-Graduate Certificate in Child and Adolescent Therapy from Fordham University.
Klara Takas joins the counseling center staff in mid-October as a health educator responsible for campus-wide programming initiatives on topics relevant to today’s student. Class of 2003, Klara received her BA from Bard (in sociology) and a MA in psychology from New School University. Most recently, Klara has been a counselor in the Open Therapeutic Community targeted at substance addicted adolescents in Greece. She has taught at American Community Schools in Athens and been a research assistant in the Brief Psychotherapy Research program at Beth Israel Medical Center.
Dean of the College
John Pruitt, Acting Dean of Studies, returns to the faculty full-time to continue as Associate Professor of Film and Electronic Arts.
Dean of Students Office
Bethany Nohlgren, newly promoted from Assistant to Associate Dean of Students, will continue to work primarily with the first-year class helping students transition from high school to college.
Lora Seery moves into the Dean of Students Office from the Office of Residence Life as the newly appointed Assistant Dean of Students/Director of the Sophomore-Year Experience to help second year students as they make their way through Moderation. Additionally, she will take on the primary administrative role within the Student Judiciary Board (SJB) and advise the Student Resources Group (SRG).
Disability Support Coordinator
Amy Shein joins Bard’s Academic Resource Center as their disability support coordinator. Amy received her BA (in psychology) from the University of Colorado at Boulder and her MS (in elementary education) from Hunter College.
Faculty
Seven tenure-track faculty join us: Christian Bracher in physics; John Cullinan who has been teaching in mathematics; Beth Gershuny in psychology; Elizabeth Holt in Arabic; Kristin Lucas in studio arts; Rufus Müller who has been teaching in music; and Emily McLaughlin in chemistry. Full-time visiting faculty join us in anthropology, biology, chemistry, humanities, Islamic studies, mathematics, performing arts, and First-Year Seminar. Haifeng Qi will be in residence for the academic year as Visiting Fellow in Chinese from Quindao University.
Congratulations to Jonathan Becker and Gregory Moynahan on their promotions to tenure, to Joseph Luzzi and Éric Trudel on their promotions to associate professor with tenure, and to Maria Simpson on her promotion to professor of dance.
Information Services
Over the summer we welcomed Bill Terry, our new Chief Technology Officer and Associate Dean of Information Services. Bill comes to us from Vassar College where he was the Director of Networks and Systems. He has a strong background in enterprise networks, administrative and academic systems, project management, communications systems, application and systems engineering, software development, and customer support.
Multicultural Affairs
Geneva Foster, after completing her doctorate, has left to pursue opportunities in the private sector including private consultation and training. Four candidate visits are scheduled for September.
Opportunity Programs
Ariana Stokas has been hired as the Director of Opportunity Programs. Ariana holds a BA (in the philosophy of art) from Bard College and a MA from Columbia University Teachers College. She is currently completing work on her PhD in Philosophy and Education at Columbia University Teachers College. Ariana has served as an advisory board member on Learning Through the Arts at the Guggenheim Museum, and she has been affiliated with the Global Action Project, and the Harlem School of the Arts. Ariana's recent work at Barnard College focused especially on improving student success in the biological sciences. She has taught at Columbia University Teachers College, where she was a Spencer Fellow.
Registrar
Jennifer Triplett, previously the Associate Director of HEOP, joins the Registrar's office as Assistant Registrar for Advising. In her new role Jennifer will assume many of the day-to-day responsibilities of the Dean of Studies, in particular focusing on supporting and organizing the faculty advising system for first-years and sophomores.
Residence Life
Andrea Conner transitions out of Student Activities into Residence Life as the new Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Residence Life.
Andrea welcomes back Anthony Chefalo, now the 12-month Area Coordinator responsible for South campus and Jen Harris, Area Coordinator for Cruger village.
Jane Duffy joins the residence life staff as the Area Coordinator for North campus primarily responsible for upper-college housing. Jane holds a BA (in international studies and Spanish literature) and a MA from University of Connecticut in Higher Education and Student Affairs. Jane served as a graduate assistant in the Department of Career Services and Student Leaders Program at Connecticut. She served in the division of university housing while at Madison as an international learning community house fellow and pre-college summer counselor and LGBT Liaison.
Jef Fries joins the residence life staff as the Area Coordinator for the Village. Jef completed a BS in Social Science from Plymouth State University where he acted as an interim Residence Director and community advisor in the residence life office.
Anna Lehnan joins the residence life staff as the Area Coordinator for main campus. Anna received her BA (in English literature) from Goucher College. She comes to Bard from the residence life office at SUNY Cobleskill where she worked in community development.
Student Activities
Marshall Guthrie moves into the Director of Campus Center/Student Activities position to continue his work supporting clubs and organizations while planning additional programs and events.
Tessa Cassidy joins our staff as the new Assistant Director of Student Activities. Graduate of State University of New York at Geneseo with a BA in English and Art Studio, Tessa worked as the Associate Director of Curriculum Development at Envision EMI before coming to Bard as the assistant to the Dean of Students office. Her related experience includes advising and facilitating youth leadership councils in Washington DC, College Union Manager and publicity and promotions coordinator at Geneseo.
