ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Hudson Valley Gamelans and the Bard College Music Department present A Full Moon Gamelan Concert under the big tent at the Campus Center Quad Lawn, on Saturday, May 9, at 8 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine. New and traditional Balinese music will be played on authentic instruments. The Full Moon concert features guest artists I Nyoman Suadin, Latifah Alsegaf, , Junko Nakamura, and special guest Dr. I Made Bandem. Artistic direction by Tjokorda Gde Arsa Artha.
Born and raised in Bali, Indonesia Dr. I Made Bandem came to the U.S. in 1968 to study music and theatre at the University of Hawaii. He received his B.A in dance and his M.A. in dance ethnology from U.C.L.A., and in 1980 became the first Indonesian to earn his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University. After earning his Ph.D., Bandem returned to Indonesia where he was appointed Chancellor of the Indonesia Dance Academy (ASTI) Denpasar in 1982. Bandem has taught at the University of Hawaii, University of California Los Angeles, Wesleyan University, University of Baltimore County and Brown University. He has published numerous books and scientific articles about arts and culture all over the world.
