BARD TO HOST CONVERSATION WITH RENOWNED AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOLAR HENRY LOUIS GATES JR.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-On Wednesday, February 3, Bard College will host a conversation with renowned African American scholar, author, and critic, Henry Louis Gates Jr. The conversation, between Dr. Gates and Bard College President Leon Botstein, will take place at 8 p.m. in Bard's F.W. Olin Auditorium and is free and open to the public. A dessert reception, in the Olin Atrium, will follow the discussion.

The primary topic of discussion will be the Encyclopedia Africana (forthcoming, Perseus Book Group), a comprehensive encyclopedia of African history and culture, coedited by Dr. Gates and Anthony Appiah.

Henry Louis Gates Jr. is the W. E. B. Du Bois Professor of the Humanities, chair of the Department of Afro-American Studies, and director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University. Last year he was named a trustee of Bard College. He graduated from Yale University, Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude, and earned his Ph.D. from Clare College, University of Cambridge. He is coeditor (with Anthony Appiah) of Encarta Africana, a two-million word CD-ROM encyclopedia of the history and culture of the black world. He is also coeditor of The Norton Anthology of African American Literature (1996), and author of The Signifying Monkey: Towards a Theory of Afro-American Literary Criticism (1988); Loose Canons: Notes on the Culture Wars (1992); Colored People: A Memoir (1994); and Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Black Man (1997). An influential social and cultural critic, Gates contributes regularly to such publications as Times, The New York Times Book Review, and The New Yorker. He was awarded a MacArthur Prize in 1981 and was named to Time magazine's "25 Most Influential Americans" list in 1997.
