SOUTH AMERICAN COMPOSERS OSVALDO LACERDA AND ALBA POTES BRING ONE-DAY LATIN AMERICAN MUSIC FESTIVAL TO BARD.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-Brazilian composer Osvaldo Lacerda and Colombian composer Alba Potes will join members of the Bard community in a concert of Latin American music on Wednesday, February 3, at 7:00 p.m. The performance, in Blum Hall in the Milton and Sally Avery Center for the Arts on the Bard College campus, is free and open to the public.

The composers will be joined by Bard faculty members Joan Tower and Bari Mort, piano and Greg Dinger, guitar, along with Bard students, and special guest soloist Sato Moughalian, flute. The concert will feature works by Lacerda, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Alberto Ginastera, Manuel Ponce, Joao Pernambuco, and others.

Osvaldo Lacerda is known for his extensive knowledge of Brazilian music and his training in modern composition. His works are performed throughout the world and have been published in Brazil, Germany, the United States, and England. Lacerda was the first Brazilian composer to receive a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation and has won several awards for composition in Brazil.

The New York Times writes that the songs in Alba Potes's Canciones Nocturnas "limn nocturnal shadows and are the very soul of brevity." Potes's compositions have been performed by the Orquesta Sinfonica de Colombia, Orquestra Sinfonica de Cali, Montreal Chamber Orchestra, Philadelphia's Network for New Music, and other ensembles. Potes teaches at the Settlement Music School and serves as a board member of the League of Composers/International Society for Contemporary Music in New York City.

Sato Moughalian, flute, is a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. She has appeared as a soloist and with ensembles at various venues and in various music festival throughout North and South America. She recently performed the premiere of William McCauley's Five Miniatures for Flute and String Orchestra and Poem by Charles Tomlinson Griffes. Moughalian is the director of the acclaimed interdisciplinary series Perspectives in Music and Art at Columbia University.
