READING AT NEW SCHOOL CELEBRATES "RADICAL SHADOWS," NEW ISSUE OF BARD'S LITERARY JOURNAL, CONJUNCTIONS.

New York, N.Y.-To celebrate the publication of "Radical Shadows," the new issue of Bard College's literary journal, Conjunctions, Bard and The New School will host an evening of first-ever readings from previously unpublished and untranslated works by 19th- and 20th-century literary masters that appear in the issue.

Bard Center Fellow William Weaver, one of the world's foremost translators, will be master of ceremonies for the event, taking place on Thursday, February 11, at 7:00 p.m. at the New School's Tishman Auditorium, 66 West 12th St., New York City. Authors taking part in the event include:

MacArthur Fellow, Pulitzer Prize winner, and Bard College Professor John Ashbery, reading passages of Vaslav Nijinksy's "The Unknown Fourth Notebook."

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Jorie Graham, author of Region of Unlikeness and The End of Beauty, reading selections from previously unpublished poems by Djuna Barnes and Elizabeth Bishop.

Patrick McGrath, author of four novels and a book of stories, reading selections from previously untranslated stories by Anton Chekhov.

Internationally renowned writer Joyce Carol Oates reading excerpts from a previously untranslated story by Nobel laureate Yasunari Kawabata.

George Plimpton, a founding editor of The Paris Review, giving the first-ever public reading of Truman Capote's earliest surviving novella, "Christmas Vacation." A long-time friend of Capote, Plimpton is the author of Truman Capote: In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances, and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career.

Bradford Morrow, founding editor of Conjunctions and professor of literature at Bard College, will introduce the evening. Morrow, recent recipient of the Academy award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, is the author of four novels, including Trinity Fields and Giovanni's Gift.

"Radical Shadows," edited by Morrow and award-winning translator Peter Constantine and published in December by Bard College, is a landmark collection of previously unpublished works by some of the towering literary figures of the 19th and 20th centuries. The issue is a compendium of fiction, poetry, drama, and other works never before published in English by such writers are Fyodor Dostoevsky, Truman Capote, Djuna Barnes, Anna Akhmatova, Vaslav Nijinksy, Marcel Proust, Anton Chekhov, Eugene Ionèsco, C. P. Cavafy, George Seferis, Robert Musil, Yasunari Kawabata, Elizabeth Bishop, Mikhail Bulgakov, and others. Conjunctions is published twice yearly by Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
