PHOTOGRAPHER TO SPEAK AT BARD COLLEGE.
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-The Photography Program at Bard College presents a lecture by noted photographer Vik Muniz on Monday, February 15, at 8:00 p.m. The lecture, open to the public without charge, will be held in the Bertelsmann Campus Center Theater.Vik Muniz, considered by the New York Times as one of "this year's hottest photo artists," is a native of Brazil now living in the United States. Muniz is noted for what he terms "photographic delusions." Some examples are: a copy of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper in chocolate syrup; Corot landscapes created out of thread; and a Medusa formed by spaghetti marinara.
This 1998 São Paulo Biennale featured a special exhibition of Muniz's photos. The International Center for Photography in Manhattan featured a ten-year retrospective of his photographs, "Vik Muniz: Seeing is Believing," with an accompanying catalogue published by Arena Editions. Muniz curated, "Beyond the Edges: An Insider's Look at Early Photographs," an exhibition of nineteenth-century photographs on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art until February 14. "Vik has a prolific mind,"says Maria Morris Hambourg, the head of the Mueum's photography department, "and is very well informed about the history of photography."
The next lecture sponsored by the Photography Program will be given by Mark Haworth-Booth,curator of photographs at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and author of Photography: An Independent Art, on Monday, March 8. Call 914-758-6822 for further information.
