EXHIBITION "CONTEMPORARY CHINESE ART AND THE LITERARY CULTURE OF CHINA" ON VIEW AT BARD COLLEGE IN FEBRUARY.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-"Contemporary Chinese Artists and the Literary Culture of China," an exhibition curated by Patricia Karetzky, Oskar Munsterberg Lecturer in Art History at Bard College, features artists who are engaging some aspect of the literary culture of China in conjunction with the current age of electronic communication. The exhibition, previously seen at Lehman College Art Gallery, will be on view at the Fisher Studio Arts Building at Bard College from Monday, February 1, through Saturday, February 27. The gallery will be open to the public daily, without charge, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A symposium and poetry reading followed by a reception for the artists will be held on Thursday, February 18, in the Fisher Studio Arts Building. The opening talk by Karetzky will begin at 1:00 p.m, followed by a reception for the artists. The symposium will include artists Xing Fei, Xu Bing, Longbin Chen, and Zhao Suikang and poets Chang Er, Yang Lian, and Leonard Schwartz of Bard College. Both the symposium and reception will be open to the public without charge.

The exhibition includes the work of four Chinese artists who live in the West: Xing Fei, Xu Bing, Longbin Chen, and Zhao Suikang.. Their art questions the cultural values of ancient Chinese society and their relevance to the future. A second part of the exhibition features digital reproductions by six artists who continue to live in China: Huang Yan, Liu Yan, Shang Yang, Wang Huaxiang, Zhang Dali, and Zhu Jingshi.

These ten artists "take the cumbersome Chinese written language as a theme in their art and seek to introduce it to the West," says Karetzky. "They are revitalizing a tradition many thousands of years old by adopting it to the modern world." The artists work in a variety of traditional and new media including earthworks, installations, web pages, drawings, and sculptures.
