INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC CONCERT AT BARD COLLEGE FEATURES EMINENT MUSICIANS.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-Noted Indian classical sarodist Abhik Sarkar will give a concert at Bard College on Monday, April 12, in the Chapel of the Holy Innocents at 8:00 p.m. Sarkar will be accompanied by Samir Chaterjee on tabla. The concert is free and open to the public.

Abhik Sarkar grew up in a family of eminent musicians. Considered one of the outstanding young musicians in the field of North Indian classical music, Sarkar has appeared regularly on All-India-Radio and Indian National Television. This is his first concert tour of the United States. He has performed at many festival and musical conferences in England, Egypt, Oman, and the former Soviet Union.

The sarode, a stringed instrument similar to the western guitar, has fifteen tarab (sympathetic) strings, three chikari strings, four main strings, and three thaat strings tuned to the raga being played. With a round head and a relatively large resonating chamber, it is based on ancient instruments seen in 2,000-year-old depictions on temple walls.
