JOHN ASHBERY POETRY SERIES CONTINUES WITH READING BY AUTHOR AND POET HARRY MATHEWS FRIDAY, APRIL 23 AT BARD COLLEGE.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-Author and poet Harry Mathews will read from his poetry on Friday, April 23, at 2:30 p.m. as part of the John Ashbery Poetry Series presented by The Bard Center of Bard College. The reading, free and open to the public, will be held in Olin Room 104.

In 1961, Mathews, with members of the New York School of poets including John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, and James Schuyler, founded and was coeditor and publisher of the review Locus Solus. Through his friendship with French writer Georges Perec, he joined Oulipo, a literary group in France that derived its name from a contraction of Ouvroir de Litterature Potentielle (Workshop for Potential Literature). Mathews coedited Oulipo Compendium, recently published by Atlas Press. He is also the author of several novels and collections of poetry including The Conversions, Tlooth, Selected Declarations of Dependence, Singular Pleasures, The Journalist, Cigarettes, and Armenian Papers: Poems 1954-84, among others.

Harry Mathews, the Paris editor of The Paris Review, divides his time between France and the United States. He is married to the French writer Marie Chaix. Mathews is the recipient of an award for fiction writing and an American award for literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and grants from the Deutsche Akademische Austausch Dienst, Berlin and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The next reader in the series will be John Yau on Friday, May 7, at 3:30 p.m. For further information, call 914-758-7425.
