THIRD ANNUAL EARTH DAY CELEBRATION AT BARD COLLEGE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 24.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-The third annual Earth Day Celebration at Bard College takes place on Saturday, April 24, sponsored by the College's Earth Coalition. From 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. fun and educational environmental activities will be offered in the multipurpose room of the Bertelsmann Campus Center. In the evening from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, two of America's best-known folk musicians, will set feet dancing with great fiddle music. All the Earth Day activities are free of charge and open to the public.

Earth Coalition president Amy Foster, a Bard College senior, began the Earth Day celebration three years ago. This year it will feature informative booths from several Bard College clubs; information on the Bard College composting and recycling program presented by Marie Post, recycling and waste disposal coordinator; representatives from outside environmental agencies including Mohonk Preserve, Red Hook CAC and Greenway Committee, Clearwater, Hudsonia, and NYCAP, the New York Coalition Against Pesticides, among others. Ray Vaughn will present Native American information related to Earth Day.

Adults and children can sample cookies and soup prepared in the solar oven that the Earth Coalition is constructing from wood, glass, and black insulating material. In this season of garden preparations, "Plant a Peanut" will demonstrate how to make a biodegradable plant pot from newspaper. The pots can be taken home planted with a peanut seed in composted soil. Face painting for children (as well as some brave adults) will also be available.

Free refreshments will be donated by Magdalen Café, Bruno's, and Broadway Pizza of Tivoli; and Tiberio's I.G.A., Village Pizza, and Terry's Country Bake Shop of Red Hook. The Root Cellar of Bard College, a health food co-op, will sell organic food throughout the day. The Earth Coalition has received many door prizes, including food from the Magdalen Café, T-shirts from Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, and a massage from massage therapist Monica Sequoia, which will be awarded to visitors without charge.

Joanne Fox-Przeworski, the new director of Bard's Center for Environmental Policy and former regional director (North America) at the United Nations Environmental Programme, will speak on "Globalization: The Ultimate Connector" at 2:00 p.m.

From 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., acclaimed folk musicians Jay Ungar and Molly Mason will play toe-tapping and square dancing music. They are well known for their work on numerous PBS documentary soundtracks and as frequent guests on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion on National Public Radio. Ungar's composition Ashokan Farewell was the haunting theme from the Grammy Award-winning soundtrack of Ken Burns' The Civil War on public television.
