FILMMAKER AND BARD ALUMNUS CHRIS HUME TO PREMIERE MOST RECENT DOCUMENTARY AT BARD.
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-Filmmaker Chris Hume, Bard class of 1987, will premiere his documentary film Beneath Los Angeles: The Making of the Redline Subway on Thursday, April 29, in Preston Theater on the Bard College campus. Screenings at 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. are free and open to the public.Beneath Los Angeles, Hume's most recent documentary, exposes the underground world of the Los Angeles subway project, which is currently years behind schedule and billions of dollars over budget. What began with Hume trespassing onto a subway construction site at Hollywood and Vine has lead to a film project with no foreseeable end. Careful to present a balanced view of the subject, both as a marvel of human engineering and a potential environmental disaster, Hume is committed to continuing his documentary until the subway project is complete. "I assume, therefore, that the film will never be finished," he says.
A daring filmmaker, Hume has a sometimes reckless disregard for his own safety that allows him to go where others will not, with surprising results. His eye for unusual subjects and willingness for in-depth study bring to viewers that which is rarely seen and less often noticed. In addition to Beneath Los Angeles, Hume's films include the documentaries Five Days in Montserrat (1998), The Primary Movers Move Russia (1997), This is Cuba (1995), and House without a Home (1991), and a short comedy, Sammy the Screenplay (1995).
