WEST POINT VISITS BARD COLLEGE ON THURSDAY, APRIL 29.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-Bard College will host sixty cadets from the United States Military Academy at West Point on Thursday, April 29, from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The following events are free and open to the public.

The visit to Bard College begins at 10:30 a.m. with battlefield orations given by three students from each institution and critiqued by the audience. Students have chosen a battle and imagined themselves in the role of Abraham Lincoln when he gave the Gettysburg address. They have been called upon to articulate what the soldiers died for. The orations will take place in the field west of the Manor dormitory at the north end of campus (weather permitting; otherwise this event will take place in the Chapel of the Holy Innocents).

After a lunch break the group will reassemble at 12:45 p.m. in the theater at the Bertelsmann Campus Center for a panel discussion. Three students and faculty members from each institution will form the panel. They will discuss the similarities and differences in the approaches to public speaking at Bard College and West Point, both in class instruction and elsewhere on campus.

This program is part of the public speaking classes of both institutions. The visit was arranged by Major Kevin Orator in the Department of Military Instruction at West Point and Professor William Mullen in the Classical Studies Program at Bard, both of whom teach public speaking at their respective institutions. Earlier this year students from the Bard public speaking class went to West Point, where students from both institutions gave informational speeches that were critiqued by students and faculty.
