COND CONCERT IN ASTON MAGNA SUMMER SERIES "YOUNG HANDEL IN ROME: DELIRIO AMOROSO" AT BARD COLLEGE ON FRIDAY, JULY 16 AT 8:00 P.M.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-The second concert in the Aston Magna summer series at Bard
College presents "Young Handel in Rome: Delirio Amoroso" on Friday, July 16, at 8:00
p.m. The concert, sponsored by The Bard Center, will be held in Olin Hall. A preconcert
talk will begin at 7:00 p.m.

In addition to Delirio amororso, the concert will feature Arcangelo Corelli's Sonata in
A Minor, Op. 1, No. 4; Domenico Scarlatti's Three Sonatas in D Major for harpsichord;
and Handel's Sonata in F Major for oboe and continuo. Performers are soprano Sharon
Baker; baroque oboist Stephen Hammer, cellist Reinmar Seidler; harpsichordist John
Gibbons; violist Laura Jeppesen; and violinists Kinloch Earle and Daniel Stepner,
artistic director of Aston Magna.

Delirio Amoroso, a cantata for soprano, recorder, oboe, and strings, was composed by
Handel at a time when public performance of opera was banned in Rome. "In place of
opera, Roman music lovers reveled in elaborate vocal works that were often
stylistically indistinguishable from operas, though they were presented in concert form
stylistically indistinguishable from operas." writes Steven Ledbetter, program
annotator for Aston Magna and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He notes that Delirio
Amoroso (love's delirium) was first performed in 1707 in the palazzo of Cardinal
Pamphili, who also wrote the cantata's text based on the classical mythological
characters of Thyrsis and Chloris.

The next concert in the series, "Orpheus and Apollo," will be held on Friday, July 23.
