A preconcert talk begins at 7:00 p.m..The concert features "Works by J. S. Bach," including the Sonata in G Major for two flutes with basso continuo; Ich hatte viel Bekümneris from Cantata 21; Brandenburg Concerto No. 6; and Laas, Fürstin, lass noch eined Strahl, Cantata No. 198 (Trauerode). The Cantata No. 21 is considered one of Bach's finest cantata compositions, according to Stephen Ledbetter, program annotator of Aston Magna and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. "The work is in two parts (which would have been performed before and after the sermon, respectively)." Ledbetter continues, "the cantata contains four choruses (an unusually large number, which has played a role in making it a favorite in our time), an aria for the soprano and two for the tenor, and one of those soprano-baritone duets that are a feature of several Bach cantatas."
Aston Magna at Bard is made possible in part by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts and through the generosity of The Leon Levy Foundation at Bard College.
Single tickets cost $15. For information on the concert series and to order tickets, call 914-758-7425.
