ASTON MAGNA CONCLUDES SUMMER SERIES AT BARD WITH "WORKS BY J. S. BACH" ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 6.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-Aston Magna concludes its summer series at Bard College on Friday, August 6. The concert, presented by The Bard Center, begins at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall. A preconcert talk begins at 7:00 p.m..

The concert features "Works by J. S. Bach," including the Sonata in G Major for two flutes with basso continuo; Ich hatte viel Bekümneris from Cantata 21; Brandenburg Concerto No. 6; and Laas, Fürstin, lass noch eined Strahl, Cantata No. 198 (Trauerode). The singers include soprano Jane Bryden, countertenor Jeffrey Gall; tenor William Hite; and bass-baritone David Ripley. The musicians include baroque flutists Christopher Krueger and Sandra Miller; oboists d'amore John Abberger and Marc Schachman; lutist Catherine Liddell; organist Frances Conover Fitch; baroque violinists Linda Quan and Daniel Stepner; baroque violist David Miller; violists da gamba Jane Hershey and Laura Jeppesen; baroque cellist Loretta O'Sullivan; and baroque bassist Anne Trout.

The Cantata No. 21 is considered one of Bach's finest cantata compositions, according to Stephen Ledbetter, program annotator of Aston Magna and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. "The work is in two parts (which would have been performed before and after the sermon, respectively)." Ledbetter continues, "the cantata contains four choruses (an unusually large number, which has played a role in making it a favorite in our time), an aria for the soprano and two for the tenor, and one of those soprano-baritone duets that are a feature of several Bach cantatas."
